Trauma

At the Psychotherapy and Counseling Center, we help people process and heal from trauma in a way that respects each individual’s pace, identity, experiences, and goals. Whether you think your trauma might be the result of childhood adversity, violence, loss, or any other overwhelming life event, it deserves to be treated with seriousness and kindness. Our licensed therapists, LCSWs, LMFTs, and LMHCs, offer trauma-informed care both in-person at our Astoria, Queens office and online for clients across New York.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is your body and mind’s response to experiences they struggle to cope with. These events might include physical or emotional abuse, neglect, accidents, medical emergencies, sexual assault, domestic violence, or prolonged stress. Not all trauma leads to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), but untreated trauma can disrupt sleep, relationships, concentration, and self-esteem, sometimes for years.

If you find yourself stuck in survival mode, avoiding reminders, or reliving the event through intrusive memories or physical symptoms, there are treatments that can help.

Treatments For Trauma

Psychotherapy and Counseling Center’s approach to trauma therapy is collaborative, practical, and grounded in respect. Our Queens-based therapists work with adults, teens, and families using patient-centered, evidence-based techniques, including:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): A method proven to reduce the emotional distress tied to traumatic memories without reliving them.
  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): Helps identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviors rooted in trauma and develop healthier ways of thinking and responding.
  • ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): Supports clients in accepting difficult emotions while living in line with personal values.
  • Attachment-Based Therapy: Especially helpful for those whose trauma is rooted in early caregiving relationships or chronic neglect.

You may not know exactly what kind of treatment is right for you, and that’s okay. Your therapist will help you decide, and you can adjust the process as you go.

Trauma Can Heal, And So Can You

Healing from trauma doesn’t mean forgetting or pretending it didn’t happen. It means feeling safe in your own body and mind again. Most people’s recovery goals include being able to make decisions without fear, connect with others without panic, and look toward the future with some hope.

We take trauma seriously at the Psychotherapy and Counseling Center, but we also believe in your capacity to grow. If you’re ready to start therapy, we offer flexible scheduling, virtual options, and experienced trauma specialists who care about your healing.
